On Sunday, Yemen announced a major military operation after Houthi fighters occupied a key road linking the city of Aden and the key southwestern city of Taiz. During the declaration, Rashad al-Alimi, head of the ruling Presidential Leadership Council, called for international support. The current development in the Middle East comes during a period of increased strain between the Yemen government, supported by Saudi Arabia and internationally recognized, and the Houthis, resuming after a four-year ceasefire (Yemen’s civil war). Last month, the Houthis seized one of the important sea routes on Yemen’s Red Sea coast and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. It marked a major escalation in the Middle East.
